Is your Kid a Closet Gambler?

gambling

It seems that gambling in any form is always open for taking a bad rap. It also seems that we have to have something to blame our children’s bad actions on. Does the possibility not exist that kids are not perfect and no matter what they are going to make mistakes. Let’s face it, we have all found some sort of trouble to get into at some point in our lives, even if we had to go looking for it.

The new concern about our youth is the increasing rise in kids becoming addicted to gambling because they are starting at a young age and therefore, gambling illegally. There have been several surveys conducted on this in the last year to determine the gambling habits of the kids. The figures were somewhat staggering. Between the ages of 12-15 21% were into betting and in excess of 52,000 kids are becoming addicted.

It seems the blame for this is being averted to the TV advertisement for betting venues.

To add more fuel to this fire the Gambling Commission also held a survey that showed about a third of online gaming sites were allowing kids under the age of 18 to wager.

There are a lot of anti gambling advocates that are vehemently sure that the online sites are all to blame for the demise of the youth. There is no disputing that yes they may have a hand in it, but how much different is it to their sneaking into the on land casinos using fake id? Or for that matter, buying lottery tickets? Where does one draw the line when it comes to what is and is not gambling when it comes to wagering any type of money?

The indicators are that most of the online gambling sites are blatantly allowing underage kids to become members, fund their accounts and place wagers. This is somewhat ironic when it’s near impossible for even the adults from many Countries to be able to make a deposit, especially in the United States.

Chances are you go to any online poker site, and you are going to see they are stringent about their registration and having you declare your birthday as well as acknowledge you are of legal age to gamble. In addition to this if an underage child happens to win a substantial pot they are in for a big disappointment. Most of the reputable sites will insist on proof of age before releasing the money. This often is by means of photo id such as a driver’s license. This obviously indicates that every possible measure for responsible gaming is being put in place.

So in summary it would at least be fair to say that the online gaming sites are no worse than the on land casinos or the many lotteries that are run throughout the country. If the chance to win a million dollars in a lottery is not encouraging betting, then I for one don’t know what is.

I think parents also need to sit down and explain gambling to their children, all aspects of it, education can prove useful for prevention.

I agree with you, I also think that there are a few casinos out there which are probably aware of underage players in their venues and do nothing about it, I think they need to take more responsibility and tougher penalties need to be introduced for those which are caught with underage patrons.

Whilst establishing boundaries is extremely important, as is educating children about the risks involved in gambling and the consequences, we must also remember not to make gambling a completely taboo subject because children rebel, and the more you tell them how wrong something is, the more enticing it becomes.

Yes there are gambling themed games on popular kids game consoles such as playstations etc but it is still the parents responsibility to purchase the right kind of games for their children, just because they are available doesn’t mean you have to buy them for your kids.
