Terms You Must Know to Play Poker D to E

To properly understand online poker you need to know the most used terms used in the games. The following is a list of the terms from D to E.

D

Deck: The set of cards used to play poker. In the most poker games the deck used is the standard 52 card deck with 13 different ranks ranging with numbers from 2 to 10 and the letters A for Ace, J for Jack, Q for Queen and K for king. There are also 4 different suits of cards; these are clubs, spades, hearts and diamonds. In usual decks the cards pertaining to the suits of hearts and diamonds are depicted in red color while the cards pertaining to clubs and spades are depicted in black color. Some online poker software allows different colorations for the deck and different ways to show them, but the meaning of each card remains the same.
Donk: Short for donkey. It is a name usually given to players with little or no skill playing poker. It is not a sign of good etiquette to call someone donk, even if he deserves it.
Dominated hand: When a player has a hand with the same higher card than his opponent’s and a lower kicker, or when a player holds a pocket pair of less rank than his opponent’s. It is called dominated hand because the dominated player only has the chance of his lower card appearing in the community cards and that his opponent’s doesn’t appear. An example would be AQ versus AK. AQ is dominated because the only chance to win is to get the Q in the community cards while the K doesn’t show up. Other strange combinations may make a dominated hand to win, but it is difficult and the most part of the time a dominated hand will lose.
Draw: Exchanging cards for new ones in the games allowing it. In Hold’em poker it is called “drawing” when a new community card appears.
Drawing dead: It is called drawing dead when a player is drawing for a hand that will lose even if he hits what he is drawing to because the other player has a higher hand than the one he is drawing to.

E

Equity: Your share of the pot if you took a percentage of it equal to the chances of winning it. For example in a pot of $50, if you have a 40% of winning the pot your equity would be $20. This number is used to calculate your expected winnings from a hand in advanced poker calculations.
Expectation: (1) The expected rate of loss or profit from a game. It is calculated from your average wins and losses. (2) Pot expectation is the amount you expect the pot to be if the game reaches the river. To calculate this you have to calculate the aggression factor and the average pot value of the table.
Exposed cards: In stud poker, the cards dealt face up to a player.

Like mentioned above, calling someone a donk is not considered to be good etiquette what so ever so don’t worry about it even if they were talking about you, they are just making themselves look bad.
