Before playing online poker it is highly recommended to understand the poker slang. The following is a list of the terms from I to L.
I
Implied Odds: It similar as pot odds, but there is still no money into the pot. It has to do with the pot expectation and used in advanced poker calculations. The implied odds calculate the money you expect to win if you hit a possible hand.
Iron Duke: A hand which is and will be unbeatable whatever cards show up on the table or your opponents are holding. By holding an Iron Duke you are sure you won’t lose. It is the best moment to slow play as the pot is already yours.
J
Jackpot: Special prizes awarded to players for different reasons. It is usual to pay jackpots if you are beaten with a very good hand by another better hand. Other kind of jackpots can be found in different sites.
Jack: A rank card in poker. Depicted as “J”, its value is higher than the 10 and lower than the Queen.
Jack up: Means rising. The action by which a player calls the bet of another player and adds more money to the pot so that other players have to equal or raise his bet.
Joker: The number 53 card into a deck. The joker can be substituted for any other card. In Texas Hold’em there is no joker.
K
Kicker: When a player hits a combination of cards which is not completed with 5 cards, the remaining card into the pocket is called the kicker. It is used in case of a tie to determine which player gets the pot. The highest kicker wins in case of a tie. For example if you hit three of a kind with 2 kings on the table and one king into your pocket, the remaining card in your pocket is the kicker.
Ku Klux Klan: A hand of three kings, it is a popular name which is not very used in online poker due to its racist connotations.
L
Lay Down: It is the act of showing cards after the last bet to see who has won the pot.
Limp: Calling the preflop with the same amount of money posted by the big blinds.
Live Blind: When a blind bettor has the option to raise.
Live Card: A card which is not yet revealed or exposed. In Hold’em poker all pocket cards are counted as live cards.
Live Player: Or alive player is a player which is still playing a tournament and hasn’t been eliminated.
Lock: Same as Iron Duke, it is a hand that can not lose because is the maximum that can be dealt. There are so many names to describe this situation where you can not lose.
Loose player: A player which is calling more flops than he should. This is not an aggressive player, just a player who plays with barely any hand being good or not.
I haven’t heard the Ku Klux Klan comment in any of my online games yet and I am glad about that too because I don’t really like it, I think it’s kind of wrong and yes I do understand that it isn’t intended to be derogatory or racist, I’m simply stating I am a person who finds the term in poor taste.
