It All Adds Up To Blackjack
In any form of gambling, Lady Luck plays her part. However, many card games – including both poker and blackjack – require a high level of skill. Hence, a novice playing against Phil Ivey or Gus Hansen in an online casino will have to have Lady Luck firmly on his side to stand in with any sort of chance of taking home the bacon.
An analytical perspective is the key factor when nurturing one’s talent for card games. While nobody wants a game to drag, players are generally allowed to take their time when deciding to check or raise, stick or twist. Ergo, special attention should be applied during these moments, as this attention is precisely catalyst for understanding the inner-workings of the game(s).
While concentration will help any novice to improve his skills (practice makes perfect, as the old adage goes) there are those amongst us that are one-step ahead of our competitors, right from the off. It is no scientific secret that people are more adept in some matters more than others as they have one side of there brain that may be more developed than the other. In the case of card games, they belong to the realm of mathematics and numbers, so those with a highly developed left-brain should in theory be predisposed to games such as blackjack.
If evidence is needed to substantiate such a claim, look no further than The Blackjack Hall of Fame. Included there are inventors, strategists and computer analysts, and one MIT professor – famously used as the inspiration for the movie 21 (2008), which was based on the “true” story of a group of MIT students who flew from Boston to Vegas to play the casinos using an elaborate system of counting cards. In reality, the accuracy of the story is dubious, as the filmmakers merged reality with fiction to create a number of clever plot twists. Nevertheless, the Blackjack Hall of Fame is real, and the math geniuses that inhabit its ranks are there by no coincidence.
The reason for this is purely and simply analytical ability. As a player in blackjack, you have control over your cards and decisions, whereas in games such as roulette or craps you are purely at the mercy of Lady Luck. Ergo, the biggest players in the world of blackjack are those with high levels of numerical skill.
However, blackjack is also the easiest card game to master. It has only one principal – that 21 is the aim for every single player. This hand is perfect, so the skill comes in achieving this or as close to it as possible while judging the strength of your own hand against those of your opponents. This ease with which you can play means that you have to focus less on the probabilities of various hands, as in poker.
It is therefore small wonder that blackjack is a great first port of call for any new gambler. The game’s ease of play is a great way to develop a card-playing ethos and, as playing blackjack in casinos online is itself training your brain to improve your numerical ability, this ability will only get better with time as your cognition improves. Then, the table is your oyster.
